PASSIONATE ABOUT PACKAGING
A short history of Toly Products.
The Toly Group was founded in the early 1970's by the late Dr. Zoli Gatesy. Dr. Gatesy, a toolmaker by profession, escaped his native country Hungary in the 1956 revolution and was accepted as a political refugee in the UK. By 1966 he had firmly established his own company, building tools and injection moulding for the toy industry. However, strong overseas competition and worsening labour relations in the UK forced a move to an alternative manufacturing location.
Toly Malta was set up in 1971 with a commitment to employ 40 people. Through the 70's, the company grew as a general trade moulders. In 1975, having completed several custom compacts for the European cosmetics industry, the decision was taken to specialize in this field.
August 1987 saw the formation of Toly's own company in the USA after several attempts to penetrate this market using agents. The success of this venture prompted the opening of a Paris office in April 1989, thus establishing Toly Products as an international group of companies.
In 1989, it was decided to invest heavily in state-of-the-art manufacturing technology, including a UV lacquering line, for the Malta plant. This concentration of hi-tech manufacturing facilities in Malta meant that the UK operation, which was previously manufacturing the higher-end products, would be converted into purely a development site.
In November 1991, Dr. Zoli Gatesy passed away, leaving his son Andy to take over the Chairmanship of the Group and the position of CEO in the Malta Plant.
In 1993, the Company passed another milestone in its corporate development by making Quality its key priority for management. In addition to deciding to go for ISO9002 certification for its Malta manufacturing facility, the Group Management meeting held in January 1994 served as a platform to launch a new TQM approach.
In September 1994 Toly BV was established in Holland to enable the Toly Group to service the Benelux and German speaking-markets and further its goal of becoming a major presence in the world market. In November 1995 Toly was awarded ISO 9002 certification by SGS-Yarsley, and re-certification to ISO9001-2000 in 2002.
While gearing itself for the coming challenges of growth and automation by investing in air-conditioned, clean room assembly units and the installation of a second state-of-art UV lacquering plant, the company remains a family business with a passion for the cosmetics industry and an emphasis on personal care and attention to all its customers.
Today Toly has broadened its manufacturing horizons to India and China and has established sales offices around the globe.
The India Plant is adopting leaner manufacturing practices and is implementing a Quality Management System based on the ISO9001:2008 standard with a scope of design, manufacture, assembly and supply of luxury packaging for the cosmetics industry. Toly Malta is committed to continuous improvement of QMS and consistently providing product that meets customer and legal requirements.
It employs around 200 people.
