The World Environment Day (WED) established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 is a people's event. It inspires action by governments, industries, community groups and individuals to improve the environment. It provides uniqueopportunity to raise awareness on environment and mobilise action by all stakeholders. The United Nations EnvironmentProgramme (UNEP) has invited people world over to celebrate the WED on 5th June 2014 with enthusiasm. UNEP has declared the theme for WED 2014 as "RAISE YOUR VOICE, NOT THE SEA LEVEL. SAVE THE ISLANDS/COSTAL ZONES

This year WED has decided to adopt "Small Island Developing States and climate change"(SIDS) in the broadercontext of climate change as its theme to support the Un designation of 2014 as the International Year of SIDS. The objective is to encourage a greater understanding of the importance of SIDS and of the urgency to helpprotect the islands in the face of growing risks and vulnerabilities, particularly as a result of climate charge. UNEPhas also come out with the slogan, "Raise your voice, not the Sea Level" to promote the theme.
