Consistent with the “Route 2015” strategic business plan towards sustainability set by the company in 2010, adidas has achieved significant progress throughout 2011. Here is a quick overview of the brand's Sustainability Strategy :

> Embedding environmental sustainability in all products, processes and services
> Effectively managing business risks and social compliance in the supply chain
> Extending their engagement internally and externally
> Creating the best and most productive workplace in the industry “by becoming a champion in talent and succession management, a world-class recruiter and a Top 10 employer in every key market in which we operate”
> Making a difference in the communities where Adidas operates

According to Herbert Hainer, Chief Executive Officer, two milestones highlight what has been achieved:

> 40% of direct suppliers and 62% of strategic tier 1 suppliers were rated as 3C or better on a scale of 1C to 5C, according to the company’s C-rating KPI – that stands for social compliance.
> A reduction of the lowest rated factories (1C) of their supply chain has been achieved from 19% in 2010 to 8% by the end of 2011.

The Highlights of 2011

> More products contain “environmentally optimized components” and 65% of all adidas athletic footwear do meet the “baseline environmental criteria”.

> Stakeholders engagement
In May, adidas hosted a stakeholder dialogue on the topic ‘Respecting Labour Rights in Global Supply Chains: The Impact of Major Sporting Events’ with Representatives from UK labour and human rights organisations, the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and socially responsible investment analysts

> Transparency
As the Official Sportswear Partner of the London 2012 Olympic Games, Adidas Published their supplier list for the 2012 Olympics and also committed to all products and services to be sourced and manufactured to environmental, social, and ethical guidelines and standards set by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). Also, almost 100% of all adidas Olympic articles contain sustainable content.

> Health
As Greenpeace launched its Detox Campaign for an end of discharge of hazardous chemicals in the textile industry, Adidas joined C&A, H&M, Nike Inc & Puma in a joint roadmap towards zero discharge of hazardous chemicals in the supply chain, a step that sets “a new standard of environmental performance for the global apparel and footwear industry”

> Compliance
The capacity-building programme to improve the lowest performing suppliers in the supply chain has resulted in more than 70% of 1C factories making the required improvements to achieve a 2C rating.

> Social
Responding to revised UN human rights principle, the adidas Group publicly issued its position on the integration of Human Rights into its business operations. The group also focused on attributing more leadership positions to women.

> Dow Jones
For the 12th consecutive time, adidas AG has been selected to join the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes, and was rated as “industry leader in sustainability issues and corporate responsibility” for the eighth time in the category ‘Clothing, Accessories & Footwear’. Adidas also made it as one of 'The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World'.
